Design Context - The Archive

Here are some mock ups just to test format sizes of the Archive before starting to design it. Each one of the three chapters will be split up into a small book to be bound together. but I have to get all my margins and formats sorted before designing. I know that I will be printing single pages and only the largest section might be a A3 cut down but everything else can be printed on A4 which makes it much easier for me.

Dimensions:

Chapter 1: 227x165
Chapter 2: 262x188
Chapter 3: 297x210

Margins:

Inside: 25mm
top, bottom , outside: 8mm

Columns:
10 rows
(All 3 sections fit into the column system)

Fashion yearbook development

These are just initial test layouts of student double spreads and course overviews to test the content before starting my final version.

Alex Dodgeson Meeting 2

I had another meeting with Alex about everything I have done so far, He was really happy with the layouts and pointed out a few things to do with the order of the publication I had to change and images which had to be added.

He also picked his favourite logo and gave me feedback on what to change and how to push it forward.

I had enough information from him to send off a quote to the printers and push the project forwards.

icons for jakes lookbook

Range of icons I drew in illustrator from images of jakes furniture. really simple and works at a small or large scale.

jake coleman lookbook pdf version

The grid i produced for jakes lookbook is really simple the most important thing about it is the inside margins. It has been extended to make sure theres enough space for text to be readable. then theres a huge middle gap which is utlised for full flush images.

Quick run through of jakes look book. I really like the icons at the bottom right. when your paging through the publication you can use them like a key to find the piece of furniture your looking for.

Dodgeson Book first draft, alternative photoshop cover.

Alex front cover tests on photoshop

Here are some quick cover variations I made from a simple concept of taking loads of the imagery from his book and changing the channels in photoshop to make them overlay each other. This gave some really interesting results. I also played around with liquifying the cover to see what it would look like. Alex liked this direction but still wanted to see more. We both said that we werent too keen on the tab with the title on and I started to think about placing the text in another place.

Alex Dodgson (initial layouts and spreading out matching project pages)

Here are some of my very initial test layouts for alex's book. all the layouts were running on a open grid where I used the baseline to line things up and just generally started to get a feel for the format and the content. I wanted it to be a fairly fluid layout to match his paint concept. I took this to him and he absolutely loved the art direction I was heading into. He did mension that he would like to see some more cover variations so I proceeded in making more covers.

Header

Body Copy

After our first meeting about the Type alex did not like the header font but really liked the body copy. He said he wanted a sans serif font for header and I took this feedback and generated more layouts with various other fonts from what he discribed to me.

Business cards screen print negative and embossing negative.

Business card backs ready for print on either mountboard or 600gsm mist.

Embossing plate negative. I ended up using half of it then inverting the other half to get a variation of embossing and debossing for his business cards.

jake coleman Invoice book tests

The invoice book is something I would like to design but im not sure if i can get hold of all the key componants and go through the binding process without it taking up too much time, andy gave me a good hint to just buy a conventional one online and rebind the front cover. this way jake can actually have a working invoice book for when he leaves uni and not something makeshift.
