Submission boards Brief 6 Alex Dodgson

This brief has been a good project to undertake in my 3rd year. I was dealing with a client who had an incredible eye for detail and always getting on my back and keeping him happy has showed me that I can deal with clients and produce good work under pressure. I feel that the logo is potentailly the only thing I am not fully happy with and If I had more time I would like to design alex a minimal brand to then expand into an exhibition instead of the other way around. I have also learnt some valuable skills dealing with commercial printers and know roughly how much things cost and how long it takes. Overall I was happy with this brief but felt it could of potentially looked a bit better if I didn't relay on having to call back to the client as much as I had to.

Range

Full range. 68pp books x 12, Canvas poster x4, exhibition flyers x4.

Book run through

Binder 2 by chvanniekerk

Printer mistake

The printed ended up binding the wrong cover on my book. He put silk on there and not matt. I wasnt overly happy nor was my client but he ended up giving me £20 off which made me feel a little bit better... but would of prefered matt and to be absolutely perfect seeing as it was my first real print job.

Canvas Cover

I havent had time to bind the book before hand in but I figured I would show on my blog that I had the 2 canvas covers and 2 coverless copies at home ready to get bound for his exhibition down at vernon street.

Posters & flyers

Canvas poster Range.

Really happy with these. I feel his photography sits beautifully on posters and the colours are ridiculously eye catching. I havent seen anything like this out there either so I know it will stand out.

Print mistake. the dodgeson has been dropped out underneath the paint must of been illustrator meticulously grouping artwork which i drag in from indesign.

Books finally arrived from printers

Poster and Flyer Prints

simple grid keeping it structured,

Same grid but just at a flyer format. same rules apply to the grid.

Font print test for readability

just wanted to do a last minute print test for the body copy before sending the book off. rather be safe then sorry if you know what i mean.

Alex Dodgeson Cover Finalised

When I designed the cover I had a look at a simular book with roughly the same page numbers and stock thickness, kind of guessed that I would get about 5mm spine depth on my cover, the printers also advised roughly this depth when i went to pick up the proof. This would allow me roughly about 3-4mm to work against for the i had to put on the spine.

example of my cover with a 3mm bleed.

Final proof for the books cover. I resized the font at 8pt and put it against it to measure how much smaller it was but it was still over and legible.

Font for Alex Final book

Managed to pick up one of linotypes new releases for pretty cheap. Helvetica Mono. Might be helvetica but its brand new and no one really has it so its not been over used. really like the open space the mono font gives in the a paragraph. It sits well on its own and can handle the open high image layout.

Proof prints from printers and my Own canvas version

Here are the proof's I received from the printers in order; Uncoated, Silk then Canvas which printed by myself in the dungeon). Alex much prefered the canvas cover so did I but this was way out of budget. We decided to settle on the uncoated although after seeing the printers proof I will go away and lighten up the artwork a little bit as it came out a slight bit dark.

Alex Invites, posters, business card mock up with Canvas and Card stock

poster A2

The print came out great but when I compared the poster to the flyers I realised I shouldn't of left such a small left margin and kept consistency throughout the collateral. I loved the flyers and I wanted to apply that grid to a A2 format.

Print artboard which i send through the printer at the exact dimensions of the canvas so i would save as much space as possible and get the most out of my money. Smart.
